A red hermit crab with blue bands at the joints of it's limbs.

This crab can be found from the Three Kings Islands to Stewart Island and the Chatham Islands, and from ~2 - 270m in depth. It prefers rocky areas.

Like other hermit crabs it is a scavenger.

This is one of only three species of Diacanthurus in New Zealand. Two of the three species, including D. spinulimanus, are endemic to continental New Zealand, while the third has also been found in the southwestern Pacific region. (NIWA)

These crabs are often seen carrying an anemone on their shell. It's thought that they do this to protect them from their main predator, the octopus.
