Grows to about 40 cm body (mantle) length. Fins roughly diamond shaped, widest midway along the body.
In NZ this is found in the Upper South Island and the North Island. Common in shallow inshore waters. Often on sand and seagrass meadows.
Predator on fish and shrimps.
Males have spectacular courtship displays. Females lay clumps of finger shaped egg strings.
Mainly nocturnal but can sometimes be active during the day.
Small harvest in NZ, Commercially harvested on a large scale in Australia
Inquisitive, will approach divers at night.
