Grayish, semi-translucent body revealing internal gut and gonads. It has an egg-shaped body with two prominent siphons; one at top, and one located 1/3 of the way down the side of the body. It is often found adhering very tightly to one another in clumps.
It is found in shallow, subtidal waters attached to docks, pilings, ropes, and other submerged structures and prefers calm, protected waters. Like other invasive tunicates, it is a fouling organism.
Filters tiny plankton out of the water.
It can grow over other organisms and eventually lead to the death of the ‘host’ organisms. This pattern makes it a threat to shellfish colonies, as well as other sessile invertebrates.
