Second largest fish species (after the whale shark) can weigh up to 4 tonnes and averaging 5 to 7 m in length (longer than a Great White!). Have very large gill slits almost encircling the head and have a huge mouth with many tiny teeth.
Often swim at the surface of the water. Occurs infrequently in NZ, most sightings are on the East Coast of the South Island.
Plankton feeder, seiving plankton from the water using it's gills.
Young appear to be born at about 170 cm but not much is known about reproduction.
