Robust plant with upright stems. Not very pleasant to eat due to a furry texture. Holdfast is shaggy, creeping stolons (horizontal connections), with attaching rhizoids (shootlike filaments for attaching to substrate). The colour is rich, dark green and the texture firm. Covered in many short branchlets it resembles rimu.
Lives on rocks at and below low water spring tide on open coasts. Mainly subtidal in the southern part of its range.
Uses the sun's energy.
