A large crab, can be up to 150mm wide. The carapace (back shield) is smooth on top and evenly lobed on the front edge, The front edged has scalloping like the edge of a pie. The crab is rust to grey in colour and the last leg is stiletto like.


This crab can be found in large numbers in sheltered harbours and inlets. Veryabundant in Otago harbour.


Carnivore, can crush cockles easily using strong pincers.
