Actinia tenebrosa
Kōtore Moana
Anemone, Red Waratah
Invertebrate
Cnidaria
Anthozoa
Actiniidae
This anemone is a deep red colour. When out of the water the tentacles are pulled it and it looks like a blob of dark purple jelly stuck to the rock. The deep red colour of this anemone comes from symbiotic microalgae living in the anemone's tissues.
Clusters of these animals can be found clinging to rocks in tidal pools and shady crevices from mid to high tide.
Predator. Some nutrition from the algae in the tissues.
Offspring are held in the gut cavity and small anemones are released from the mouth.<
