The opening to the shell (aperture) is large and has a white callus which extends onto the body. The spiral support has 3 distinct teeth. The shell is pale greyish to tan or red brown.

Common in saltmarsh areas and under rocks, seaweed and other organic debris, most commonly around the high tide mark on sheltered to semi-exposed shores can extend to the upper mid intertidal zone. May also be found in the splash zone, under rocks or vegetation. Can be in piles of worn boulders often 20-30 cm down where detritus collects.

Grazes on decaying algae.
