Sand coloured, with long hairs on the chelipeds (nippers), body is about two-thirds the length of the abdomen. The front of the body has 3 lobes, the centre one being the largest.
Found on mudflats and sandflats, in pools of water or burrowed shallowly in the substrate. Intertidal and shallow subtidal.
Feeds on organic detritus at the surface of the sediment.
When startled can leap away with vigourous flaps of the abdomen. Swims using pleopods (swimmerets) on the abdomen.
