The colour varies from pale brown to chocolate and may have white streaks and mottles.


Frequenly seen during the autumn in the low tide zone to 5 m on rocky shores in central and southern NZ.


Feeds primarily on sponges.


If threatened can discharge a dark purple inky "substance."
