The girdle has a velvety appearance. The shells are coloured to match their surrounding providing camouflage.
Commonly found in low intertidal to depths of 20 m around NZ. Usually on the underside of cobble or where the sand and rock meet on bedrock.

It broods its young and can be found with clusters of brown and pink eggs along the side of its body.
