The plants are fan shaped and lie on one plane. They have regular even branching and grow to about 30 cm tall (sometimes 50 cm). Attached bya branched holdfast. Colour is gey-brown drying to black and the etxture is tough but brittle when dry.
Low intertidal to subtidal, on rocky reefs on exposed coasts.
Uses the sun's energy for photosynthesis.
